Dying to be Me, by Anita Moorjani

Published in 2012, Dying To Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing by Anita Moorjani, is destined to be regarded as one of the most important examples of metaphysical books on Near Death Experiences (NDEs).

Why?

Because Moorjani didn’t just have an NDE: she had an NDE that precipitated a miraculous healing.

Moorjani had been battling cancer for four years, and she was losing the battle. She was admitted to a hospital because her body had finally shut down.

The official diagnosis was stage 4 lymphoma. (Stage 4, in cancer classification, means that the cancer has spread [metastasized] from its original location to other organs.)

Moorjani, in other words, was dying. She was unable to breathe on her own. Her body was riddled with tumors. She had enormous open sores on her skin. Her organs were shutting down.

She lapsed into a coma.

Then, detached from her physical body, she experienced herself as a being far greater than what she’d ever known herself to be.

She understood that if she chose life—if she returned to her body—she’d heal completely.

And she chose life.

Within days of awakening from her coma, her tumors began to recede. Within a month, biopsies found zero evidence of cancer.

At first, her doctors insisted she be administered chemotherapy, but a few months later they agreed to stop before she’d finished the entire course. She knew she didn’t need it—and she didn’t. She was cancer-free.

Moorjani’s account of the NDE itself is quite brief—around 20 pages of the 200-page book. But that’s by design. Her NDE unfolded as a piece of a larger story, a spiritual journey that culminated first in the cancer, and then in her sudden and profound healing. As such, the book is more than an account of someone’s encounter with a metaphysical phenomenon. It also offers lessons for all of us as we struggle to answer life’s biggest “why’s.” Why do we get sick? Why do we die? Why do we heal, sometimes, and why does healing sometimes elude us?

Dying to be Me is an important book for anyone looking for insight into disease, healing, and death—and what lies beyond it.
